Bold Moves
A contemporary cultural exchange

Keeping a finger on the pulse of the contemporary dance world, this mixed-repertoire presentation seeks to boldly explore boundaries, pioneering collaboration and innovation that defies traditional expectations of classical ballet. This season Cincinnati Ballet proudly joins a weeklong cultural exchange by showcasing Israeli artistic innovators, including the famed choreographer Ohad Naharin and the music of the Ariel Quartet, in conjunction with a series of community cultural events.

Minus 16
Choreography: Ohad Naharin

Ohad Naharin, artistic director for Tel-Aviv based dance company Batsheva and contemporary dance innovator presents his piece, Minus 16, a collection of vignettes incorporating improvisation and his acclaimed “Gaga” method. “Gaga” is a language of movement created by Naharin that challenges dancers to liberate themselves from old habits and explore new and inventive ways to use their bodies - by connecting with music, the mind and the space around them. Irresistible and mesmerizing, Minus 16 promises to be eye-opening for the dancers and audience members alike, as together we journey through a new philosophy of movement, forsaking our traditional notions of dance performance.

“Naharin has combined pure movement and theater in pieces charged with tension and drama that nonetheless, he claims, go beyond political metaphor or any particular meaning; Naharin is instead ‘‘turned on by the act of composition,’’ by textures, colors, rhythms.”
–Anna Della Subin, The New York Times

"Minus 16 not only delights in its own wackiness, but also celebrates the joy of dancing.”
-San Francisco Chronicle
