No season of celebration would ever be complete without The Kaplan New Works Series, now a Cincinnati institution. New Works remains committed to celebrating innovation in the dance world and brings internationally recognized choreographers right to our door step. This year is no exception with a dazzling, all-women roster. Victoria has chosen the best female choreographers to present their work alongside her, in keeping with the tradition of innovation while highlighting the talented women who are underrepresented in the dance world. Morgan will present a world premiere of her own along with new works from Jennifer Archibald, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Heather Britt.
Jennifer Archibald, the founder and artistic director of New York City's acclaimed Arch Dance Company, pulls from a variety of influences to boldly and seamlessly infuse ballet with nuances of hip hop. This combination of hip hop with classical aesthetic in movement greatly influences her musical scores, which she often custom engineers to include an assortment of compositions. Audiences may be familiar with her piece Sit which wowed Cincinnati audiences last season as part of The Kaplan New Works Series. This time she teams up with fellow female innovator: the artist known as Swoon. Starting out as a street artist, Swoon’s unique, life-size wheat paper prints and cut outs quickly caught the attention of museum and gallery curators, established a celebrity following and launched a foray into performance art. Witness true innovation when these two mastermind women come together to create an unparalleled collaboration of performance and visual art, exclusively for Cincinnati Ballet.

Annabelle Lopez Ochoa is an international choreographer extraordinaire. She spends much of her time traveling the globe choreographing for some of the most esteemed companies. She presents her thought-provoking piece, Eros Redux, a U.S. premiere, based on the myth of an androgynous people, who were both male and female, descended from the moon. Zeus, fearing their power, divided them into man and woman. Ochoa’s innovative nature makes her a perfect fit for New Works. Temecula Performing Arts Examiner writes, “Ochoa is a truly masterful choreographer with an edge for what dance can and should be in this constantly changing industry.”
Heather Britt is the creator and director of the popular DANCEFIX classes, and her work has been featured many times in The Kaplan New Works Series as well as being featured in 2016’s Director’s Choice showcasing groundbreaking female choreographers and Director’s Cut in a collaboration with dancer, James Cunningham. She has established a devoted following with Cincinnati audiences as her choreography exudes an energy of fearless confidence and innovation, anticipated year after year.
